Raccoons

Masked bandits are trashing Arkansas neighborhoods and your Cooperative Extension Service warns that raccoons, nature’s masked bandits, adapt well to city living, nesting in and around homes where food is plentiful.

Raccoons are opportunistic feeders, ransacking trash cans and stealing pet food left outside overnight.

Discourage natures hooligans by securing trash cans, pet food dishes and other possible food sources around your home.

Grilling Safety

Put food safety on the grill at your next barbeque.

Your Cooperative Extension Service recommends frequent hand washing to prevent the spread of harmful bacteria.

Only thaw meat in the refrigerator, never on the kitchen counter or in the sink.

Using a meat thermometer is the only sure way to know that food is properly cooked.

Transfer cooked food to an clean platter to prevent cross-contamination.

Fire Ants

Fire ants are flaring up in neighborhoods all over Arkansas and your Cooperative Extension Service recommends using only approved commercial ants baits at regular intervals to control fire ants in your yard.

As yet, fire ants cannot be completely eliminated, but fire ants can be substantially reduced when entire neighborhoods coordinate fire ant control efforts.

Contact your county Extension agent to begin a neighborhood abatement program, and be sure to visit our website, uaex.edu.

June Gardens

June is the last chance to shape up your spring garden.

Your Cooperative Extension Service recommends pruning your spring blooming shrubs as soon as possible to insure the best flush of flowers next year.

Spring blooming shrubs set their buds in the summer.

Pruning now will insure time for your plants to recover and set their flower buds.

Pruning later in the hot, dry summer will stress your shrubs making bud set less successful
