Ice Cream Month
Ice cream is a cool,
summertime tradition in Arkansas,
But your Cooperative
Extension Service recommends eating this sweet treat in moderation.
Regular ice cream is high
in calcium, riboflavin, and protein, but is also high in saturated fat, and as
part of a balanced diet should be eaten only in half cup servings which about
the size of half a baseball.
Consider low-fat ice cream
as a healthy alternative.

Conserve Water
You can lower rising utility bills and help the environment.
Your Cooperative Extension Service recommends saving water and your budget by
raising the cutting height of your lawn mower, because longer grass blades
conserve soil moisture.
Only water when you can leave footprints in your lawn.
Install rain barrels to collect water to use in your gardens.
Sweep instead of hose driveways and sidewalks clean.

Fresh Produce
Fresh is best for fruits and vegetables.
Researchers at your Cooperative Extension Service recommend buying fresh,
Arkansas produce to receive maximum health benefits.
Research at the University of Arkansas suggests that nutrient and antioxidant
levels in fruits and vegetables decline when processed for juices and other
products or when they are stored without refrigeration.
Frozen produce is a viable alternative when fresh is unavailable.

Fire Ant Treatments
Are you tired of fighting fire ants?
Your Cooperative Extension Service has a one-two punch to knock-out your fire
ant problem.
For long-term results, first broadcast an approved insecticide to your entire
lawn.
One week later, circle the remaining mounds with the product as prescribed on
the label.
For a quick kill before barbecues or other outdoor activities, apply contact
insecticides that give immediate, but temporary results.
