Aquatic Sciences Day Set for September 18

PINE BLUFF, Ark. - The 7th annual University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) Aquatic Sciences Day for high school students is scheduled for Thursday, September 18, 9:30 a.m. - noon. The event will be held at the UAPB Aquaculture/Fisheries Center Research station, behind the Agricultural Research Center off Oliver Road.

High school students will experience a fun and educational day of biology, chemistry, engineering, mathematics and nutrition through hands-on activities related to aquaculture and fisheries, in an outdoor setting. This is also a great opportunity to learn about careers and education in the field of aquaculture and fisheries.

This year's program features eight new learning stations bringing the total to 21. Each learning station is tied directly into the content strands of the Curriculum Framework for various subjects. Most of the activities at the learning stations will be continuous and interactive. Among the new demonstrations are fish metabolism, growing fish in recirculating systems instead of ponds, tools and techniques to determine the age of a fish, types and habitats of Arkansas turtles, and luminescent fish - glowing fish that live in the deepest parts of the ocean. Find out how their lights work, how they find mates and avoid predators.

Other demonstrations will present the tools and techniques used by fisheries biologists to sample and evaluate lakes, streams, and rivers, water chemistry, fish trivia, and the harvest of an aquaculture pond.

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission's traveling aquarium will also be on site to display some fish native to Arkansas' rivers and lakes.

For more information and/or to sign up to your school to attend, contact Cassandra Hawkins-Byrd at (870) 575-8123 or cbyrd@uaex.edu.
