| Lazendra Hairston, UAPB research assistant and Earth Day coordinator, shows off the big, red bin, one of three which will be on the parking lot at L.A. "Prexy" Davis Dr. and Watson Blvd. on Earth Day. This bin will be a permanent campus fixture for use by students, faculty and area residents, who are urged to bring their newspapers, white and colored paper, cardboard and #1 plastic bottles to this bin at any time for recycling. |
PINE BLUFF, Ark. - "Fill the Recycle Bin - UAPB is "Going Green" is the theme of this year's Earth Day activities at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB). The School of Agriculture, Fisheries and Human Sciences is inviting its neighbors, area residents and the community to turn out en masse to recycle goods on April 22 in celebration of this 39th annual Earth Day.
Activities begin at 11 a.m. with the announcement that UAPB is "going green." Then, manned booths will open and recycling opportunities begin. Recycling bins will be open from 11:30 a.m. - 7 p.m.
Jefferson County Recycling will place two recycling bins onsite (one day only) to serve as a temporary drop off location for tires and white goods (kitchen appliances, water heaters, air conditioners and any electronic appliances). A third recycle bin for newspapers, white and colored paper, card stock, cardboard boxes and #1 plastic bottles will be onsite and permanently located on the parking lot at L.A. "Prexy" Davis Dr. and Watson Blvd. for use by students, faculty and area residents at any time.
Representatives from various organizations including Jefferson County Recycling, Cooperative Extension, Natural Resources and Conservation Service, Pine Bluff Household Hazardous Waste, Chemical Stockpile Emergency Preparedness Program, Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality and Novel T's will provide educational materials on soils and conservation, answer questions on recycling, provide suggestions for minimizing pollution from stormwater runoff, and show samples of products made from recyclable materials. Participants can recycle printer cartridges at the Printer Cartridge Recycling booth. All booths will close at 2 p.m.
More than 1 billion people in 174 countries are expected to participate in Earth Day activities worldwide, making it the largest secular civic event in the world. If you have questions about UAPB's Earth Day activities, contact Lazendra Hairston, regulatory science research assistant at UAPB, at 870-575-8548.
