4-H Poultry Chain a Great Success

Poultry Chain offers 4-H members a great alternative to larger animal science projects. The Sebastian County Extension Service continues to see excellent participation and success in this project. The 4-H poultry chain is an ideal way for 4-H member to get the hands-on experience caring for an animal without requiring a large start-up budget and a lot of space.  Since 2008 Poultry Chain participation has more than doubled in the county and has maintained over 50 participants for the past three years. This group of 4-Hers has learned to care for, maintain, and market small backyard flocks with each participant receiving 25 hens every year.  The project has seen great community support making it the most popular animal project in the county as well as the county fair. The pullet chain has generated well over $50,000 dollars in auction money for the participants in the last three years. Contact us at the Sebastian County Extension Office for more information about 4-H clubs and activities.

Sebastian County Master Gardeners

The River Valley Master Gardener Program is designed to increase the availability of horticultural information and improve quality of life with horticultural projects. Trained volunteers, known as Master Gardeners, accomplish these educational goals. Program participants receive 40 hours of intensive horticultural training from the Extension office and are expected to give back 40 hours of community service within a year after finishing the training. Training areas include basic horticulture, fruits, houseplants, ornamentals, vegetables and diagnostic keys to horticultural problems. In 2012 a total of 155 trained Master Gardeners volunteered over 20,000 hours with their time valued at approximately $360,000. If you are interested in becoming a River Valley Master Gardener, contact the Sebastian County Extension Office.
