Severe Weather Recovery

Audio/Video Script:

Severe weather can strike anywhere, at anytime in Arkansas. Confusion and chaos often follow in the wake of damaging storms as people struggle to put their lives and property back in order. You can speed your recovery by being prepared and acting quickly and decisively following a devastating tornado or other natural disaster.

If your home or property has sustained storm damage, call your insurance agent immediately. Your home may be unsafe to stay in and you may need to make arrangements to temporarily relocate.

If you don’t have insurance, contact the Office of Emergency Management while they are in the area to see if you qualify for state or federal assistance.

If immediate repairs to your home are necessary, take photographs or videotape of the damage as evidence if there are future disputes.

Don’t be in a hurry to settle your insurance claim. Instead, keep your insurance agent current on repair progress and repair costs because additional damage may be discovered once repairs are underway. Only settle after all repairs have been made to your satisfaction.

Keep all insurance documents, photographs and other repair receipts in a safe place. You may be able to claim insurance deductibles and other uncovered repair related costs from your state and federal taxes.

For more disaster recovery information contact your local county Extension Office and follow the links in this section.
